Chinese national sentenced to 3 months imprisonment for attempting to bribe police officers

A foreigner was jailed for trying to bribe police officers to secure her release from custody.

No amount of bribe can ever tempt the public officers imbued with integrity. No attempts of bribery will ever succeed. Anyone who tries to do so, will have to pay the price.

2. On 5 December 2014, Yang Ming Juan, a foreigner was charged in Court for two counts of corruptly offering a gratification of S$2,349 to police officers Tay Jia Ying Jasmine, Chia Chye Kiat, Phua Tien Soon Francis and Woon Jian Hong as an inducement to release her from the police custody which is punishable under section 6(b) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, Chapter 241. The respective charges are attached for reference.

3. On 11 March 2015, Yang Ming Juan pleaded guilty to one count of corruptly offering gratification to a police officer under section 6(b) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, Chapter 241 and was sentenced to 3 months imprisonment. Another count of corruptly offering gratification to police officers was taken into consideration.

4. In Singapore, it is an offence to bribe, or attempt to bribe, public officers. Any person who is convicted of a corruption offence can be fined up to $100,000 or sentenced to imprisonment of up to five years or to both.

5. Singapore has always adopted a zero tolerance approach towards corruption. The Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB) takes a serious view of any corrupt practices, and will not hesitate to take action against any party involved in such acts.
